Hi,

I was trying to install Ubuntu today using my USB drive. When I first boot to the USB drive everything seems fine, the splash screen appears and it appears to be loading. After about 30 seconds I receive several hardware failures followed by the statement, "drm_kms_helper: panic occurred, switching back to test console. Rebooting in 30 seconds.."

Hardware:
i7 960 @ 4.2Ghz
12Gb DDR3 Corsair Dominator @ 1600Mhz
GA-X58A-UD3R Motherboard
Sapphire Tri-x R9 290

I am overclocking my CPU so perhaps that could be the problem. I would like to maintain my overclock however so if there is a work around I would love to do that.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Solution
MCE indicates a hardware error. Return to stock speeds (stable speed) and try to install again.

Or maybe you have a bad stick of ram

It's a possibility, which is easily tested by reverting back to stock speeds. At least that would eliminate/confirm the overclocking as the cause.
