PC not communicating with monitor or tv

Hi all, I'm new to this site, so forgive me if I'm not posting in the right area. I have had a look at the site for similiar problems to mine and couldn't find an answer, or a solution that I understood (!) - so again, sorry if this has already been answered.

I recently moved house and when I set up my ASUS pc with its usual LG flatscreen monitor, in exactly the same way it had been set up at my old house where it was working fine, suddenly the two wouldn't communicate. The pc powers up, and the monitor also powers up and immediately goes into power saving mode, which means it hasn't received a signal from my pc. I thought it might be the old VGA cable I'm using (the monitor has no other ports), so a new one is on order. Meanwhile, to test this idea, I connected my pc to the TV using a HDMI cable. The TV too displayed a 'no signal' message. So now I'm concerned that the issue might be with my pc itself.

My pc is an ASUS essentio desktop CM1740, running windows 7. I have not made any hardware changes to the out-of-the-box product. My monitor is an LG Flatron 1943SBPF. The cable is an old male-male VGA.

I cannot afford to replace it, it was expensive when I bought it, and I'm starting a masters course in two weeks - so I'm feeling very under pressure to fix this as soon as possible. I am a total novice when it comes to fixing computers so please bear this in mind with your replies.

Thank you.

Solution
Could be your graphics card (if you have one), cable or the monitor itself. Or that you've hooked up the wrong port on the PC and/or the wrong port on the monitor.
Double check your connections.

Try a different cable and monitor.

Thanks i7Baby. I've solved the problem - it turns out that I had two VGA ports on my pc and when I unpacked and reconnected everything, I connected the cable to the wrong port. Oops! Swapped it to the other port, the one attached to my graphics card, and it worked again :)
