Im thinking of updating my mobo. Im currently running a 295x2 & a 290x in trifire on the Asus Z87-pro. The Z87 pro only has a single 16x slot . To get the best amount of bandwidth to both cards ( or all 3 effectively) should i upgrade my mobo to one that supports dual 16x pcie/ The 295x2 has a plx chip on it so would getting a board with a plx chip cause any conflicts (like additional latency) or am I going to see performance improvements?

Solution
This is also a setup I may be doing also.

Asus says this - 2 x PCIe 3.0/2.0 x16 (x16 or dual x8)

If I am correct, that'll work fine. When I was using 1 7990 a few months back I was crossfiring on the card mechanically and not through a Xfire cable or the lanes. The X8/X8 configuration is for the two cards in two slots which is what you have, shouldn't be a problem.
