Hi!

So i have a 5+ year old laptop Compaq Presario CQ61-217TU, and it supports SATA2 but I want upgrade from the HDD to a SSD.
I know that SATA are backwards compatible but dont want spend the extra bit of money on a SSD if its not capable of SATA3.
But i want to know if my PC can support a SATA3 connection?

Solution
first off (as far as i know), no, if it is sata2 only, then that's it (unless you use an expansion card or something.

however, with that said, sata2 is fast. Honestly, you will have a hard time telling if an ssd is running on sata2 or 3 on everyday usage. unless you bench or something.
i have both, an old sata2 ssd and a fairly new sata3 ssd. i still have my os on the sata2 ssd (because i'm too lazy to install everything if i go to the sata3. my rig still boots in under 15 sec (after the beep).
my advice, go for it, you will get sata3 when you upgrade or buy a new pc.
even a sata2 ssd is way way faster than mechanical drives. i've been using ssd's for maybe 5yrs now, never going back to mechanical drives (for the os)
