Hi guys. I'm currently building a new pc and I'm torn between the cpu's. The fx 8350 is so much cheaper. I'm looking at a 140 dollar price for the fx 8350 from the place I plan on buying it from.

For the I5, I think I'll get a better performance. Not sure though. Anyways with the i5 i'm looking at 170 and above. Which is a lot more than the fx 8350.

My gpu is going to be the r9 280x and I'm looking for something that won't bottleneck that gpu.

(One more side note. When looking at about 90 percent of videos showcasing the fx 8350, I notice a ton of stuttering in the gameplay. Which is why I'm hesitant on buying it, even at such a low cost.)

Anyways this is the build. (I have already purchased the gpu)

i5 rules in gaming, it'll crush FX 8 in single core performance, on which most games right now rely. It is more power efficient (less TDP) and has more upgradibility (say to i7 or Xeon in future).

You'd need to OC FX 8 to meet it to i5 non-K's level, which'd require an af cooler and a good MoBo, thus pushing up the costs, you can get away with a $60 MoBo on i5.

Also, for the current build, you don't need Z MoBo for locked i5, a H MoBo would do. You also don't need af cooler, stock ones are fine. i5 4590 is cheaper right now.

None of the CPU will bottleneck the GPU but i5 at stock will give better results than FX 8 at stock.

Depends on which i5 you're going for and what model. Generation 3 i5s will be cheaper than 4th generation equivalents but they won't perform as well as the newer variants (but not by that much).

Take a look at this for example - http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Core-i5-4570-vs-Intel-Core-i5-3570 (I'd take this sites benchmarks with a pinch of salt but you can see the pont I'm trying to make)

You also need to consider if you want a 'K' model (unlocked CPU) so you can overclock it if you wish.

In any case, the i5 will outperform the 8350, even if you overclock it (which will be hot!).

As a note, and this is off topic, but the GTX 970 is actually a huge gain on the 280x, even with a stock cooler. You can find that for $330. This will gain you more performance than any optimization on the CPU.

But in reality, if you're just gaming, do yourself a favor and get the i5. The intel environment is a much safer place to be right now. AMD is having some stagnation problems, and there's no clear path forwards on their roadmap for their enthusiast slots, while next gen intel broadwell chips should run on any given 1150 board. It may be a touch more expensive right now, but later on you'll be happy.

Also, Meteor is right. Intel chips are much faster in gaming right now. If you don't want to overclock right now, cut the CPU cooler, get an i5, and take a look at that 970. It's a heck of a card :)

Like the others have pretty much said, the FX 8350 is out of it. The FX 8xxx CPUs used to be competitive at a price point but now since you can find Intel Core i5-4xxx CPUs for about $180 and Intel Core i5-2xxx and i5-3xxx for cheaper they have completely lost their competitive edge on price point too. Pretty much if it is an i5 and it has four numbers in the name like i5-4570 then its going to outperform the FX 8xxx CPUs and be better. The only exception to this is the ultra low power ones, but that questionable too.

Like was mentioned above the Nvidia GTX 970 is a lot of power, it offers about 30% more performance for about 30% more cost. You can find an R9 280x for about $230 is the cheapest, and a GTX 970 about $330 is the cheapest. The GTX 970 has several other improvements too so if you have enough for it, its a much better choice.

Thanks for the replies guys. I'll go with the i5 4590 as suggested by Meteor. I just wish there was something a bit cheaper, but oh well. And I'd love to get the Gtx 970 but I got an amazing deal on the r9 280x for under 200 dollars so I bought it right away.

If you want a cheaper chip, the i5-4460@ $190 is not a terrible choice. And a 280x for $200 is totally a great deal. I just saw the $300 price point on your PC part picker and just had to chime in :)

The deal on GPU is great, the arrival of 900 series doesn't mean R9 200 series is outdated, 280X can still max out games, nothing in games has changed, only the hardware has become all the way more competitive in the $300 segment, but 280X for $200 is a tad cheap offer, good you took it.
Also, any i5 4th gen will defeat the FX 8 on stock, so feel free to get your hands on 44xx.
