So I got an Apple TV for Netflix and Crunchyroll for the bedroom. The issue is I don't have a tv for the bedroom. I am looking for something in the 27" range. Here in Australia it seems I can get a better brand monitor for a cheaper price than the TVs of the same size. Also the TVs are usually 720p at that size whereas the monitor will be 1080p. I have never used an IPS monitor but I hear they are nice. Can an IPS monitor substitute a TV for movies/videos?

Oh and also have a budget of around $300.

Will you be using your PC for movies/videos?

I won't be connecting it to my PC. I will be connecting it to Apple TV for netflix/movies basically.

Yes an IPS monitor will work. :p  All it is, is a simple HDMI -> HDMI port.

The monitors for bedrooms are far better, with an IPS decision on your hand it makes monitors the no brainer. Televisions aren't good to sit close to, and you need to give it distance to avoid eye damage. Compared to the sharpness and colour of the IPS display, that is far better then the ordinary 720p television. The reason why televisions are so expensive is they have their own in-built graphics adapters, which if you have a PC don't need. You will far enjoy the visual experience of a IPS Monitor compared to that of a Television.

In general you get a lot better quality out of a monitor than you do threw a TV. Specially if it is a IPS panel.

If the monitor is 1080p.. and the tv is 720... get the monitor without a doubt.

But let me link you this thread... It should help you re-consider.

Yeah I have been searching for comparisons for awhile, but they are mostly like that; connected to a PC. I most likely won't connect my new display to a PC at all. I have been favoring the IPS monitor, I was just looking to get some insight as whether or not it can server as a TV substitute for movies/shows/etc while not being plugged into a PC.

unknown, you are saying the IPS is a no-brainer even if I am not connecting it to a PC?

yes, The Television will not match an IPS panel, the viewing difference from pixel amount to pixel type is amazing. Connecting it to a PC would make it an even better choice, if it were being connected to a DVD player then a T.V would seem the logic.

Brand - Samsung, Asus, Benq, Dell, LG (To extent) and AOC are all great brands

Model - PLS by Samusung and IPS/AH-IPS for the other brands. Response time less then 5ms is prime and a refresh rate of 60Hz.

From your list the last one is the best of the three, a great product from LG.

Awesome, thanks. On that last one it has a "Headphone Out" input. Since this monitor has no speakers, I will likely need to get some external ones. Will that headphone out jack send audio out that comes in through the HDMI?

Was just browsing reviews on the LG site of that monitor and someone used it for the cable receiver and had speakers in the headphone jack... Guess that answers my question by first hand experience from someone else who has owned this lol.

If you select it as the output device, yes. Also note: If it has a microphone input, that may not allow HDMI to passthrough audio to the monitor, in other words the mic input may be wired directly to the headphone out. If that is the case don't worry and just use your PC audio output instead.

Why not an IPS TV? You must have at least SOME available in Aus.

I have stated a few times I am NOT using my PC for this monitor lol. However I also have the option of running speakers from the audio port on the Apple TV box so I wasn't worried too much about built in speakers, was just curious about that. Thanks for the quick help, unknown.

LG has a 27" IPS TV in Australia, but that is $799. Prices here are insane, which is why I am in this dilemma in the first place lol. I am trying to keep it $300 and under if possible. And in order to do that I would have had to get an inferior brand TV vs a good brand monitor.

Understood, didn't see that. That choice of monitor won't let you down, enjoy!
