Hello,
when I was instaling windows 8 on my computer i didin't pay attention on the hard drive options ( i thought it automaticly splits it into C and D ) and i ended up with only C: and D: being my optical drive. People have been telling me that i should do something about it ( they said something about the computer being faster) but i don't know how?

Thanks.

It wont make it go faster. But in case something happens. If you put something on another partition (like documents or whatever), it should be safe if something happens on C.

Because you can format C and the other partition will still be there. Partitions are like separate hard drives, but on the one hard drive

If you want faster buy an SSD. And no when you do an install you have to create partitions. And you can also delete them in the setup screen

As Paul stated you will see no real speed increase by having two small disks from a single platter separated by a logical partition . The disk only has one spindle and one read -write arm it will perform the same regardless of how you carve the disk up.

I would not worry too much about this .

In the long run if you wanted to create a disk specifically for the OS you should buy an SSD and use imaging software to clone your OS install onto the new Disk effectively moving C: onto the SSD and renaming your currecnt C: as D: or E: If you dont want to move the optical drive.

Hi game-source,

I'd like just to add to @PaulNZ's answer.
Just like he explained, it's good to have more than one partition on your hard drive as the OS is installed on the C partition and if it needs modifying or reinstalling, your other partitions (D, E etc.) won't be affected. And like @PaulNZ said, "partitions" are like separate hard drives, located on one physical HDD.
Usually, when getting a new hard drive it needs to first be partitioned, then formatted, then you can install your OS and everything else.
Now it's not so convenient for you to have only a partition C on your new HDD, because if something happens to your OS, your files would be affected too.
All partitioning and formatting happened from Disk Management. Please note when deleting a partition or formatting a drive, the information that's on it gets deleted (if there's any).

Cheers!

So how can I "split" the drive? I want to play it safe.
