Last year I wanted to fix my brother's old PC, since my PC I'm using at the moment is about 5-6 years old and I can't afford to buy a brand new PC, yet.

His specs:
CPU:Intel Core i5 760
Motherboard: MSI H55-GD65 motherboard
Graphics card: MSI 6850 Cyclone
RAM: Apacer 2x2gb ddr3-1333 PC3-10600 cl9 ram
PSU: 600w EZCool

The problem was, the PC would start for 1-3 seconds and then just die. Every time.

I then bought a new PSU and RAM stick (Corsair VS 650 and Corsair 1x4GB 1333 value RAM) I then inserted the new PSU, RAM and my GPU, leaving the CPU and mobo.

This then fixed the 1-3 issue, but gave me another issue. The problem now is when I start the PC, the PC does not die, but the screens does not come online. I remember experiencing this with my own PC a few years ago, and had to replace the GFX card. But, I'm using his graphics card in my PC now, and it's working. I need to add I did insert a hard drive, but there was no OS installed on it.

So, what is my best option right now?
Do I buy a new motherboard and hope it works?
Is my CPU broken now?
Do I try to sell all his old hardware?

I really have no clue and feel so depressed. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks so much in advance!

Try removing everything that is not nessesary for booting into BIOS. Even the graphics card and plug in your monitor directly into the MB. Also remove all exept one RAM brick and try out all bricks one by one. Trying the old RAM bricks could also be a solution.

If you get the system to boot by doing this, then add the other components one by one until you reach the problem.
This guide is quite handy. http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/261145-31-perform-s...

Sorry for the late reply.

I have done everything on that list, and the PC is still showing a black screen.

What are my options now?

The problem is to find out what hardware is broken.. Did you do the steps I mentioned before the list? Have you tried with the old RAM sticks? And what happens if you start the pc with no RAM inserted?

If it is the MB that is faulty, it is very difficult to pin that one out. But if you have gone through every step of that list and with no result it is a strong suggestion that it is the MB that is broken.

I tried everything you said apart from starting the PC with no RAM sticks in, which I will try now.

Silly question, but can I start a PC without a harddrive and without a OS on it?

Yes. You should be able to boot the pc to the BIOS.
EDIT: But not with no RAM sticks in it. Just curious if your MB reacts in any way. Usually it beeps a lot and tells you it does not like it with no RAM inserted.

And yes, try to start it without the hdd installe as well.

Started the PC with no RAM stick, as well as no hdd and still nothing. No beeps, screen doesn't come one.

Guess my best bet now is to look for a new motherboard?

It seems it is either the MB or the PSU. You could do one more test by taking the CPU out and reinstalling it. Some MB go through a full reset when the CPU has been removed.

Did you try with the old psu btw? To eliminate that possibility.

Yes, I used my own PSU and it did the same thing.

I'll take the CPU out and re install it and see what happens.

Re seated the CPU and still no change. I really don't want to buy a new mobo to find out that the mistake is still there. Guess I'll have to take a risk then.

Unless someone else has a better idea, I whould do that with the risk that it is the CPU that is faulty. But I think we at least have narrowed it down to that..
