I've been getting my butt kicked all weekend trying to upgrade processors from a i7-4770k to a i7-4790k on a Asus Z87-Deluxe motherboard with latest 2103 motherboard firmware. I must have removed and checked over 5 times then even went so far as to install this new i7-4790k on a ASRock Z97 Extreme3 which powered up and posted perfectly. My concern is I don NOT want to continue removing and reinstalling the processor too many times as I fear I might crush/ruin pins after too many testing insertions. I opened up a log with Asus and they replied back informing me to update to 2103 (which I already did). Does anyone presently have a i7-4790k installed on a Asus Z87-Deluxe motherboard and if so what bios version are they using? I research all the forums and found only 1 thread using the same mb/cpu combo but with the 1802 bios. I don't want to flash "down" as it should be obvious new or current releases of Asus firmware should include all prior fixes from older bios releases. Yes, I could just install the i7-4790k on the ASRock Z97 Extreme3 motherboard however it's lacks all the other options which I require in the higher end Asus Z97-Deluxe mobo. Suggestions anyone?

I thought that Devil's Canyon wasn't compatible with the Z87 chipset. You could try downgrading to the older BIOS as it could have actually been a bug in an older revision that somehow let it recognize a 4790K.

Why not just sell your Z87 Deluxe and 4770K and buy a new Z97 Deluxe?

Morning Everyone! Finally got a fix for my inability to upgrade from a i7-4770k to a i7-4790k on a one year old Asus Z87-Deluxe motherboard and things are now perfect. Having worked this for almost 47 hours (on and off) I got a reply from Lijay Quan, a Asus support rep and his suggestion was to indeed use the latest 2103 bios firmware listed on Asus' web site however I should use either the Asus Flash Back utility or the Asus BIOS Updater utility instead of the Asus EZ Flash2 utility. Reluctantly took his advice and upon powering up after the processor swap I was finally able to post and boot up into a successful desktop. A quick tweek of the bios settings with a bclock of 125 and a 36 multiplier got me a immediate overclock of 4.5GHz on the i7-4790k .... something I have never ever been able to post on this Asus Z87-Deluxe motherboard. Only item I must be cognizant of with is the fact Vcore is now 1.3 versus 1.2 volts which to me is uncomfortably high. Most importantly this is using a 15 year old Zalman 9900 heatsink/fan cpu cooler. During this lengthy upgrade I found out no matter what I do a Corsair H100i cpu water cooler will not fit into a HAF 912 mid tower case which is why the Zalman is once again being put into service.

Observations and conclusions:
1. Asus support once again has come thru with top notch support which I expect. You would also expect this considering they are a top tier board manufacturer and along with this pay premium prices for all their motherboards. Asus requires 48 hours to respond which is perfectly acceptable since responses come from Taipei.
2. For those who champion Asus motherboards you may want to wean yourselves completely off of using EZ Flash2 even thought it's the easiest way to flash. It is apparent using EZ Flash that it is NOT a complete firmware flash as I can clearly attest to.
3. Asus Flashback is so nice if you happen to have this utility built into your Asus motherboard. It's so fast (took less than 10 seconds from start to finish) I redid the flashing 3 times because I refused to believe it was this thorough. I base this on the fact that I have always used EZ Flash2 which took over 3 minutes each time.
4. For me, a processor upgrade was a good choice since I was going to retire my son's old rig with it's extremely hot 1366 Intel cpu. He now get's my Haswell i7-4770k along with a ASrock Z97 Extreme3 motherboard which I got for FREE...cheap upgrade using same DDR3 memory, same everything
5. X99 presently is just too overpriced presently. Yes, I can get the X99 processor at MicroCenter for $299+tax however DDR4 memory is still commanding premium prices...just have to wait a year until DDR4 comes down to "sane" pricing. Asus X99 motherboards also are insanely priced ...just patience until Newegg has either "open box" motherboards or until X99 motherboards lose their cache'
