I got an IPS monitor last night which i intend to use for browsing and gaming too. I still haven't actually used the monitor but im wondering, are IPS monitors good for gaming? The one i got has a 5ms response time and, according to the manufacturers website, a maximum of about 84 hz frequency. I know you can get monitors with better response time but im wondering if this is good enough for gaming? Does IPS effect gaming experiences or does it enhance it? Did i make a mistake by buying this monitor? Should i have bought something faster?

An IPS monitor is not inherently better or worse for gaming.
They are equal to a TN panel with equal specs.

I personally use an 2 x LG 5ms, 60Hz monitors and find my gaming experience great, however the monitors are a little darker because of the IPS technology. (brightness can still be increased if needed, you will need to do this in some games, especially older titles)

Something to note, even though they are dark, the shapes in the darkness are more easily definable, making games like Dark Souls and Skyrim a lot more intense and the lighting less overexposed.

I could never go back to TN panels, but it remains a preference and is not for everyone.

overall picture quality is better on IPS panels however gamers "prefer" Tn panels because of fast 1MS response time and 120+ refresh rate so its about what you prefer to have.

If you are a competitive gamer TN is better but IPS doesn't really "hinder" or make the experience worse, it's just different. Some people prefer better colors and viewing angles, and some people prefer higher frames at the cost of washed out colors and poor viewing angles. TN panels get better every day though, and the average guy couldn't tell the difference in a TN panel and an IPS panel these days
