My specs: i5 4670k @3.9ghz
r9 270x 2gb
I regularly get 300-400 fps on minecraft (max settings)
When I start recording it drops to 20-30fps.
I have changed the vsync options in the gpu control panel, and altered dxtory settings.:
@1080p full quality 30fps
@720p lowest quality 30fps

I have chaned the max fram cap from 30 to 120 but no change. Odd thing is, I get 70 fps recording bf4, and 140 recording bo2/others.

Any ideas?

Recording a video takes up a lot of HDD usage, so if you would run minecraft on a drive, and save the video on another, you should expect higher FPS. And when i say different drive, i mean different physical drive, not a different partition. Any old HDD should do.

Try running minecraft on the hdd and recorder on ssd. Also, check if the recorder locks at a certain frame rate

Hey dude I can't get DXTory to detect Minecraft at all. Which Java versions do you have installed?
