Cores and virtual cores

Recently started overclocking using Intel's Extreme Tuning Utility which reports numbers of cores being used, etc. Just to see how my video editor was utilizing cores, I open Intel XTU and Windows Task Manager at the same time.

Intel XTU reports that only one core was being used during render. Yet Windows Task Manager showed all 8 'virtual' cores being utilized.

So how can this be possible? Is Windows Task Manager wrong?

Win 8.1 Pro 64bit with latest updates. Is there any app out there that shows real cores vs virtual cores usage? More curious than anything about how my video editor utilizes cores.

When I turn on hardware acceleration, Intel XTU reports only one core used. This mode uses the GPU to render certain effects.
When I turn off hardware acceleration, Intel XTU reports all four cores used.

Windows Task Manager shows all 8 virtual cores used both times even if I set the BIOS back to default. Beginning to think Microsoft got it wrong. Thanks
