Very quick question - Yes or no answer, will said adapter work to connect to the internet?
Here's an example of what I'm looking at:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/RJ45-PABX-Secondary-Telephone-A...

More about : phone line ethernet adpater

Don't think so. You need some kind of modem to connect to phone internet. DSL modem or dialup modem for plain old voice phone.

If you look at the description on AMAZON it even says it is to use a phone handset with RJ45 wiring, not to connect a computer to a phone line.

Hi

This part seems to for BT phone over network cable ( for use in UK)
Not Ethernet over telephone line cable

Normally in UK we use a broadband filter with male bt connecter and BT socket + rj 11 socket
The rj11 going to broadband modem and bt socket to your phone

Not clear what you are trying to do and what country you are in though I assume you are in UK

Essentially all I wanted to do was connect my Desktop to the internet with a wire, though we only have a phone line and no ethernet port. (We have a router, but it cannot be put in my room as it is not the main phone line and the connection is notably worse.)

List exactly what you have for network equipment (modem, router brand and model, cabling, etc... Are you using DSL since you are talking about phone lines? Why can't you just use wireless? You can also run a network cable form the router to the room, or use power line networking.
