I'm getting very confused here, trying to set up my first RAID (1) data storage on my Win7x64 Pro PC. HGST is out because their firmware says you can't RAID them, nice to find out after I buy them and am now charged a 15% restocking fee.

My next option would be WD Black drives, but they say they're "not designed" for RAID, and that I should use WD Red. I am simply trying to RAID 1 two drives in my computer box as data drives, I boot off a velociraptor and plan to keep it that way. I don't need drives for NAS or super business designed drives.

Do I HAVE to get the Red, or will the Black work?

I'm going for the 4TB drives planning ahead so I don't end up with far too many drives, I have space in my box and mb for two more drives. I'm also looking at the WL 4TB (remanufactured WD?) that does claim RAIDability, but I'm skeptical because I got burnt on my last "cheap drive" purchase.

Can anyone please shed some light on what I need in a drive to be able to RAID it?
Will the WL 4TB drives work for RAID 1 as data drives?

Thanks in advance.

WD Black does support RAID 0 or 1. Seagate NAS or WD Red are 'specifically' for RAID, meaning they're optimzed to run best with NAS. Proof:

I'm not knowledgable about WL but as far as I know, they're grey market drives.

AWESOME!! Thanks for the info and the link, it is very pleasing to read something that finally explains it and (almost totally) ends my frustration ;-)
