Ok, I've heard/read that the msi gtx970 may have a problem or 2, coile whinning and freezing images? are there any numbers from this? how many people experience this? is this for all the cards or is it just being unlucky if you get one. my msi gtx 970 should be arriving this week, I want to make sure if I should open it, install it and check if I have the problem, or if I just have to send it back and trade it for an asus or gigabite version

More about : msi gtx 970 problems

Most detailed review so far

I have had several boxes brought here with coil whine issues, never did solve one by changing GFX cards, quality PSU did the trick every time tho.

So for most people coil whining is caused by the PSU and not by a defective card? If so, then i'll be happy to stick with the MSI card (still hasn't shipped yet).

I read the review yes, that's why I went for the MSI version. also, the evga has a cooling flaw. and there wasnt much info about the gigabyte version when I ordered. so I choice the MSI. everyone was also recomending the MSI card.

anyway. would you say a cx750m is sufficient? I know this is only a tier 3 PSU but it does run quite stable for me.
also, I can live with some noise. i'm used to it tbh hehe. but what about the performance drops? are these a result of the coil whine? or also an unstable PSU

my MSI cards seem to be running fine with no coil whine or real temp issues...as far as I can tell. I'm in the mid 30s idle and at just about 70s load with a 50% fan curve set...

can either wait for new batches to come out or wait for evga ftw version

I have an EVGA G2 750W PSU and horrible coil whine on my MSI 970.
It's not always the PSU, apparently...

the thing is I only got this PSU recently, and with buying the 970...Well lets say i'm out of money for a while ;)
any way to establish if it is the PSU or the GPU itself?
I also read that there is a bug with the fans for some ppl, but that is is solvable with a vbios update.

^ Do you have the card yet, and coil whine?
I think it's nearly always the GPU.

not yet, it will arrive tomorow.
they were sold out though, so they got a fresh shipment, so maybe I got an updated version or so, but I doubt it.

^I have studied 2 years of electronic ICT and now I'm doing electromechanics, I have quite a good understanding of what is happening.
but it's still interesting. ty

I have never experienced coil whine in a personal build. Whether it's by careful selection of components or dumb luck who can say. Of course, have had a few come in the door. I pointed to those links cause they had some useful information .... I particularly like the glue gun and paper towel tube discussion for locating the source which you won't likely find in electronic textbooks but I have heard of peeps solving the problem this way several times. Another user told me he solved it by sliding a thermal pad under the coil.

I use the CX750 myself. Have been using it for a couple years on my second rig and it powers a Gigabyte 7970 Ghz edition. You will have no problems using it on a GTX 970.

If I remember correctly the coil whine is from not limiting the FPS. So not so demanding games might try to render hundreds or thousands of FPS.

You can limit the # of FPS using MSI Afterburner, or like software. I am not 100% sure, but check out Google... I think that might help.

Well the CX600 is also Bronze so by your criteria the CX600 will be "alright" too ..... but it clearly isn't

Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum is simply a measure of electrical efficiency as in "how green a PSU is", and not a definitive indicator of PSU quality .... I could not even tell you what the "metal" rating is in any PSU I won because it does not factor into the purchasing decision.

hmm, one more question. I could google it, but while we're on the topic I might aswell ask. what's the wattage I will need to run gtx970's in SLI(2-way)
and i'll have to kepe an eye open for a decent seasonic made PSU then.

I'd say around 750w, if you plan to OC either the GPUs or your CPU.

All current nVidia cards listed here:

http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-2311121/power-su...

the solid buy right now in US is the EVGA B2 .... not as good as the G2 but 9.5 build quality rating and $50 on newegg.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

Pretyy funny when ya look at the PSU costs $50 and the colored cable sets cost $91 :)

Ouch

Best
Seasonic X Series

Near perfect
Seasonic N12, EVGA G2 / P2, Corsair HX650-850, Axi series,

Very Good
Seasonic M12, Corsair TX V2, EVGA B2, XFX Core Edition

Jack, what do you think I should do with my MSI 970? I've got it boxed up ready to return.. But I don't know if I should ask for a new MSI 970 and hope it doesn't have the same problem or worse, or if I should try the ASUS, although some people have been reporting issues with those too. Ughhh I have a feeling this coil whine issue can be traced back to Nvidia.

Could try the glue gun / parafin method.

Well newegg had both MSI and Gigabyte in stock...so I went ahead and purchased a pair of both. Basically my newegg card is maxed out right now, but I figured I could test out which I like most and return the other...newegg premier is pretty legit ;) .

God Amazon said that they won't be in stock until 3rd week of October. I don't know whether I should just wait it out or camp out newegg until one goes in stock.

Newegg seems to get them in stock a lot faster than Amazon

I have not heard any coil whine yet from my gtx 970 that i'm aware of. I also havent even really got too play a whole lot since i have been working 12-14 hour days. But one problem i for sure have is my BF4 kept freezing on me since i put the new card in. It freezes at like random times too, it could be once i go to deploy and just load in the game, could be when im driving, or it could be during a big fight, EITHER WAY....it is getting old haha. Idk if it is a defective card or just that the drivers arent awesome yet. Ill hopefully have time this weekend to diagnose whats going on, ill keep you guys posted. I also have an unopened EVGA ACX SC GTX 970 in my room. first i ordered that and started reading all the bad reviews, so i ordered this MSI. Still undecided on whether to SLI them, or just return the EVGA and keep the MSI. decisions decisions.

oh, well the evga isnt broken or anything, it just inst cooled properly... one of the heatpipes didnt connect with the chip. but it's not broken. it just has less efficient cooling then it should have but it shouldnt overheat or anything.
And about the MSI card. I put mine in yday. I dont have any problems. I stresses on both furmark and valley for 2 hours each without getting many fps drops(fps drops happen, ofc, but it's not frequent). from what I can hear I dont have any problems with coal whining neither. And today I've been playing bf4, and I dont get any freezes or so. maybe you could try reinstalling your drivers?

and perhaps you can just exhange that evga for a new revisioned(is this how it's said?) version. they basicly put a new heatsink on the existing cards with propper heatpipe alining.

It's not broken, it's simply "defective".
