I have just downgraded a customers laptop from Windows 8.1 to Windows 7 Home Premium (at his request) but he has 'phoned me this pm saying that someone from Microsoft 'phoned him to say that his PC was at risk and he should log-on immediately. Fortunately he had the good sense to call me first after asking this person to give him call back details and being refused. Is it likely to be a scam or is this something that Microsoft have started to do??

It's always a scam when someone calls claiming your pc is at risk/infected

Definitely agree. It's a scam. Doubt that they would call him to tell him that his pc is at risk.

Microsoft is not going to call you to tell you that you have a virus or that your windows system is out of date or anything.

If it is the same company "calling on Microsoft's behalf" to tell you your PC is infected and you decide to humor them to see what they are going to tell you to do, their first instructions will be to go download a third-party remote control client instead of using Windows' built-in remote assistance.

I was simply playing along to waste the scammer's time since I was bored at the time. When the call got to the instructions on how to download stuff, I used my Android tablet to see what it lead to just in case it may have been a drive-by installer.
