I wanted to see what people's thoughts are on how demanding 1080p gaming is in PC gaming. I here a lot of talk about 1440p, 4k, but from what I can tell future games are going to make hardware scream at 1080p. I cpu/gpu set up right now is currently core i7 2600k/7970. I can run all games, but I must lower settings on games like Witcher 2, Metro games, Crysis 3 and I'm not sure about AC4 as I don't have it. These game are already pushing my rig at 1080p. I don't have an R9 290x, 780 ti, GTX 970, but even these GPUs only hit about 50-70 fps with the games I mentioned maxed out. And they're not that superior to my old 7970 as they only push 20-40 more fps.

Now the other issue. Witcher 3, MGS5 Far Cry 4, Batman Arkham Knight etc. a large amount of future releases will be even more demanding. Hardware is advancing, but with resolution and graphics increase together puts hardware at a disadvantage. I've been considered getting a GTX 970, but from what I've seen with benchmarks the performance gain is 20 fps maybe 40 for a game that really like the 970 over 7970. Crysis 3 at 1080p is a challenge for every single GPU solution. Crysis 3 is only the beginning of next gen so I'm not sure why people act 1080p is a walk in the park for mid and even low range gpus. If a GPU can't destroy anything in a resolution I don't see that resolution as being easy to run for that GPU.

Every year, more and more advanced technology is being released every day. Sure, getting an R9 290x will help but is it worth it now? An R7 260x can run current gen games just fine. When that gets outdated, add another one or buy an R9 270x or higher. Games from now until the next generation won't see much change in performance or graphics. An R7 260x will do you fine FOR NOW.
BTW, new hardware for games won't be incredibly demanding because remember, consoles are not changeable (As with hardware) so games have to work with them too.

r7 260x would melt running Crysis 3 at 1080p. R7 260x can't run current gen games effectively your talking about last Gen. They're are very few current gen games and the games should only get more taxing. Witcher 3 won't be able to be run at 1080p max with a GTX 780 ti.
