Hello,

I have an older HP computer (a1230n) with an a8ae-le motherboard. It is currently running windows 7 (x64) and has its stock AMD 64 3700+ single core processor. I am considering an upgrade to a AMD 64 X2 dual core processor. I know this is possible, however the HP website only lists the x2 4800+ as the supported dual core unit. I have found a x2 4200+ unit on eBay for a very decent price. As long as the socket is the same, I should be able to drop the processor in and run it with no issues pertaining to the clock speed, correct?

Thanks for any help/advice!

What HP intended to say was that the 4800+ is the maximum supported processor in that particular class, i.e. dual-core Athlon 64's. Nothing will stop you from installing the 4200+ as long you get the correct version. (One of the most annoying things about AMD's naming scheme from those days was one name meant a whole slough of chips). ADA4200DAA5CD is the part number, correct? If so, buy it. It will work just fine.

P.S. A 4400+ with a part number of ADV4400DAA6CD would be a better performer with negligible impact on heat output. It does cost $10 more though. The choice is yours.
