Hey Guys,

I'm currently getting my first build together and was hoping for a bit of help RE the components I've chosen vs what my objective is.

After a lot of research I've decided I want my first build to be future proof for at least the next 3+ years, so my intention is to build a computer which can game on ultra settings on a 4k monitor. (Crysis 3, BF4 etc)

Please let me know if you think the below components will achieve this.

MB - gigabyte ga-970fxa-ud3 (SLI and Crossfire Support)
CPU - AMD FX 8350 @4.0 GHz (8 core)
CPU Cooler - COOLER MASTER HYPER 212 EVO COOLER 120mm
RAM (16GB)- 4x Crucial 4GB DESKTOP DDR3 1600Mhz DIMM 240pin
HDD - Western Digital 1TB
GPU - 2x 4GB GTX 970s (Brands, Zotac and Gigabyte) will SLI
PSU - RAIDMAX RX-850AE 850W 80PLUS GOLD POWER SUPPLY
Case - COOLER MASTER K380 Black Gaming Mid-Tower
Monitor - AOC U2868PQU Ultra High Definition Monitor. resolution 3840 x 2160 (refresh rate of 60GHz)

Please let me know what you think and feel free to offer any suggestions. I'm new to the world of computer gaming, have mostly been a console gamer up until now but thought what's the point in building a computer that can only game on 1080p @ 60fps+ I might as well buy a console considering the next gen consoles can achieve this now.. which lead me to the idea of 4k gaming

Cheers guys!

Solution
this is with one card at 4k for a few games so with 2 cards you should be able to easily push 4k/60fps for most games if not all

At 4k Resolution, you are really going to want to have the i7 4790k as a minimum. Also, if you are going 4k, might as well get 2x 980s, as well as a much bigger power supply (personally I would go with EVGAs 1300w PSU, its relatively cheap, but very good!). I would get an SSD (likely 256gb) and a 2tb HD. A better CPU cooler too.

the 980 doesnt need a big psu, its really energy efficient even 750W would run with SLI. but just get 850W to be on the safe side.

you need 2 x 980's @ Ultra to get 30-40 fps in most titles currently.

IMO forget 4k gaming right now, it's just not viable unless your budget is huge.

Hey stoggy26
I've done quite a bit of research and also feel like 2x 970s should be adequate to handle gaming at this resolution.
Was looking for more reassurance that my rig would be up to the task.
Have definitely taken a lot in from everyone's input so thanks for your help guys!

FYI - For those qestioning why I'm:
a) Choosing AMD over Intel for my CPU - I personally feel amd is better value for money and i won't be performing any strenuous that would require me to move up to an i7
b) Looking to game at 4k given the lack of content available at this stage - I'm looking to future proof my rig and know without a doubt 4k resolution will be the future. Why I choose now? That fact i found a 4k screen at such a low price (with at least 60GHz) was the main reason i decided to go ahead with it. Up until now there would have been no point buying a 4k screen as they were either running at or below 30GHz or would be way to over priced! (I got my screen 28" for $699 NZD)

Read this : http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/NVIDIA/GeForce_GTX_980_SLI/22.html

Also you said you want a machine which will game at 4k over the next 3 years, i doubt that games released between the 2-3 year mark would run at 30 fps. but you never know.

Personally i'd rather play @ >60fps @ HD rather than ~40fps @ UHD

My system:

i5 4670k @ 4.2ghz
MSI Z97 G45 Gaming
16GB DDR3
2 x Asus 970's (overclocked in SLI)
Samsung PRO SSD.

I'm not considering 4k at least for a year, and then i'll be buying a better gfx card and the latest INTEL cpu. AMD are not as good as Intel core for core.

Maybe not at all depending on oculus rift - thats going to be a game changer! :)
