I have a computer that is quite a few years old, and I am thinking I might need to upgrade the motherboard and CPU. As the title states, I am pretty limited in my experience, so I don't know what would constitute a worthwhile upgrade. I have gone to websites to price items, but I am trying to make sure I am not wasting money. I am currently using:
MB: ASUS M4A78T-E
CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 945
RAM: 16GB
Graphics Card: AMD Radeon HD 7900 series with Dual Monitors
Boot to a Samsung SSD
1TB internal HD for storage

A worthwhile upgrade would be at least an i7 3770 or 4770

If you want to overclock get the k version with a z motherboard
If you don't want to overclock get a non k with a h motherboard

The 3770 goes on z77 or h77 board
4770 goes on z87 or h87 boards

You could get a similar i5 CPU instead

Your other parts will then fit this. Just check the motherboard you pick takes all that RAM

You should get a small ssd too, about 250gb is good for pprice performance

Sorry, I forgot to put that in the original post. I would like to keep the total between motherboard and CPU around $400 or less. I do have some wiggle room though.
