hi there i have just ordered a set of astro a40,s with mixamp 2013 and to my dismay my pc has no optical out and no mention of dolby digital live
does this mean that i will need to buy a soundcard to get 7.1
or would i be able to connect the mixamp to my tv via optical without a loss in surround quality(yeah i pc on a tv i prefer it)
thanks in advance for your help

Solution
from what support are saying it seems that yeah its basically a dac with a headphone amp built in
works perfect with xbox ps4 because they have dolby but due to them not advertising you need dolby digital live for surround on pc (dont wanna put people off i guess) i think a lot of people using them dont get the full surround

so much conflicting info on this they should just stick a ddl required for surround on pc warning on the box or even better incorporate it into the new 2014 model

here,s thread on it in astro support forum

thanks a lot for your help astro just confirmed that the xonar u1 lite should...

thats how i understand it too

my problem is my motherboard has no optical and doesnt support dolby digital live (which i,m told i need for the mixamp to output proper virtual surround)

thanks for your help btw this been confusing the hell out of me

my hope is that the ASUS Xonar U1 Lite USB Sound Card i linked will output 7.1 or 5.1 through optical dolby digital live to my mixamp giving decent surround my only concern is it doesnt mention 5.1 or 7.1 just that it has ddl

You have 8 channel sound and an optical out via header on the motherbd. They just didnt implement it on the backpanel which is why you need that thing I linked. This is all in your manual.

hi there thanks although i can connect an optical to the motherboard and my board has 7.1 it doesnt support dolby digital live which acording to astro is needed for the mixamp to function correctly in 7.1
without ddl it will still upmix stereo into virtual 7.1 but wont recieve the needed dolby signals to output the directional 7.1 as it should
