Seagate is alright, but so is WD. Now I'm not going to be biased here since. I have had a Seagate barracuda HDD and a WD caviar blue and 2 other old 320 and 256 gb WD HDD.

The Seagate. I had made this horrible whine that pierced my ears... It had a faulty capacitor and it was brand spanking new.

The WD I got later is fast, reliable, and spared my ears of whines.

Any choice you go for is solid, but I'm leaning more towards WD and make sure you get one that is 7200 rpm with 64 mb cache.

I would avoid this hdd the ST1000DM003

A search in Google has a lot of hits about this hhd. Saying its hard to install anything on it.

It doesnt matter what you try to install on it. Some people had to use Seagate diskwizard software just to get anything to recognise it

If your talking about barracuda then yes, many of them were faulty but majority worked correctly. They are solid if you get a working one...

Hi there gonemad61,

I would say that the things you should consider are RPMs, cache and storage capacity. You can not be really sure which HDD manufacturer produces the best products nor someone can tell you that for sure. The only thing I can think of to 'measure' quality and reliability might be the limited warranty. So you may consider that as well.

Cheers,
