Hi guys. I recently bought a full HD monitor 23.6" (ASUS, widescreen) and I'm now using it with my laptop. But my laptop's max resolution is 1366x768. So now if I set the monitor to 1080p resolution, it's displaying the window with black spaces (horizontal and vertical). Basically, laptop's resolution on the 1080p resolution monitor, I think.

Is there any way to extend the resolution to make the picture fit perfectly into the monitor? Even if I set the monitor to 1366x768, the sides extend all the way, but the top and bottom still have black spaces (I guess because the monitor is widescreen?)

Or is there no way out of it? I also recently ordered a PC with a better graphics card, so I assume that will fix the issue, right? I'm not very tech savvy so any help is very much appreciated! :)

Thank you!

Press the Windows key + P and choose "Extend" instead of "Duplicate."

The reason this is happening is because in Duplicate mode both monitors have to have the same resolution. And if they're not the same resolution it'll default to the monitor with the lower resolution.

Thanks, but I have extended it and it's the same. It's still laptop's resolution (I would assume?) on 1080p monitor's resolution.

Still have no idea how to extend the picture to the whole size of the monitor...

Any other ideas?

What's the graphics card of the laptop. You might have to go into the control panel for the GPU and play with some settings.

Sorry for bumping this in 2013 but I had the issue and found my solution.

The computer had an AMD HD 7xxx card. The resolution was set at 1920x1080 on both the monitor options and Windows resolution but still the image didn't use the entire monitor area.

The solution is in the Catalyst driver options at :
My digital flat panel
scaling options
move the slider.
if it's not available, play with options in the My digital flat panel - Properties

Hope this helps
