CPU Overheating Problem [Help!]

So I bought my computer a couple months ago worked fine and temperatures were perfect! I could run any game I played max settings with good FPS! Now my specs are I3 2100 8gb ram and a 750 superclocked. So my average temperature was around 40 - 50, 50 being the highest. So yesterday I thought I needed to apply thermal paste in which I did. The temperatures lowered and everything went back to normal. Day later the temperatures start going back up in 50 - 55 . Which lowers my FPS causing me to go lower my settings. Anything I'm doing wrong?

Solution
Did you OC your i3? If not, there must be something wrong with the cooler. Fan not running at the correct speed maybe. Have you verified the temps with more than one temp pgm?

Although, I suppose there is the extremely slight possibility that the CPU itself is failing.

You shouldn't have had to replace the Intel thermal paste that early in its life. Did you apply the new TIM very lightly? Too heavy an application can retard thermal transfer instead of enhance it. Has the stock cooler come lose on one of its posts? I had a motherboard once that had a slightly oversized mounting hole that allowed the one push-post to pop out occasionally. Check too, that the fan is running at the same speed it always has and that it speeds up to its max RPM when temps go up.

It lowered the temperatures by like 7, but shoots up while in a game to 60c and is unplayable! It used to run about 45 max. What would've changed? I applied a pea size amount. All the pins are in correctly.

I put my computer above my desk, cleaned out everything. It's around 80 - 90 Fahrenheit where I live. I don't get it :(

Did you clean off the old stuff good?

Did you have to remove the cooler and re-seat it while installing it. That will introduce microscopic air bubbles between metal surfaces that will retard cooling.

The i3 CPUs are very cool running processors. What does it idle at?

I took of the heatsink and removed everything, reapplied the thermal paste and put it back on. Pushed the pins in and started it up. Around 50 - 55 when playing some games, but when I play SMITE [MOBA] it goes up. Now its pretty hot where I live, but I know thats not the real problem. It used to run at 35 and max 45. Is it my voltage or anything? I dont know anything about it, to low or to high?

Nope, no overclocking. Then fan is about 2300 RPM and yes I checked it with multiple programs. I'm thinking about taking it to a shop tomorrow. Weird how is used to run fine .

Might be cheaper to pick up a 2nd stock cooler and test it.

Ok. So what would I do with that? Replace that with my current fan? Sorry don't know a lot.

Yes. Just a suggestion. swap your cooler for a new one like it. If the issue is gone, you know it was the cooler. If it is still present, you can assume it is either the CPU or the MB isn't controlling the voltage correctly. Btw, what is the vcore when the high temps happen?

So swap out the heatsink? Or the actual fan? And it goes around 1.176 to 1.186 is the core voltage is what CPU Z says. Speedfan says the vcore is 1.18 and stays.

The vcore sounds OK. I meant swap out the whole cooler. No sense in just swapping the fan.

Have you tried pulling the CPU and making sure there's nothing wrong with the socket/contacts? Maybe just re-seating it will coorect the issue if it isn't making good contact with one of the pins.

As in pulling the actual cpu out? If so then no I haven't tried that. If that doesn't work what heat sink would work?

If you aren't comfortable doing that sort of work in the PC, then maybe you would be better off taking it in to a reputable shop after all.
