Anyone have tips on getting a board with the latest BIOS firmware already installed? On MSI's own website, they tell you that there is a 2% chance to brick the board when updating, so I was hoping some of you would know the trick to get the latest?

I already have one MSI board and decided not to update but would like to see the difference with the second board if any.

Thats why I use ASUS mobos. You can update it in the BIOS. Or with USB flashback if it supports it

I always get the latest BIOS on a new motherboard. If it has a problem, RMA it.

My MSI board can update in the BIOS as well or with USB , but MSI still says there is a 2% chance brick it. I was tempted to get an ASUS board, but I've heard constantly that they have next to zero tech support so I went with MSI and I have to say that they are quick to pick up the phone and go out of their way to help if needed which is sometimes good for a noob like me.

Yeah, I should have done that right in the beginning, but now my wife is holding on to the build I did for her like there is no tomorrow, so I will try it with the build I'm doing for my brother.

Dont really need tech support for bricked ASUS mobos caused by BIOS's..

You can use put a cd in, reflash it. Even if its dead

There's always a chance that a BIOS update might fail, but it's much reliable today then say 4-5 years ago, between new builds, upgrades and troubleshooting/repairs I prob flash around 100 mobos a year, haven't had 1 brick in over a year and a half

Now that's good to know. I'll try it then and see how it goes, thanks for the help.

Yes, there is a possibility that the BIOS update will fail. But even then, there is the possibility to recover the system. I do look for options to update the motherboard when buying a new motherboard.. Asus has the CrashFree Bios option to update the BIOS even after it has failed or been corrupted.

I never knew that. Could you or Paul NZ, or anyone else recommend a good stable ASUS board comparable to my MSI Z97 U3 Plus board? I'd really like to try something different in my brother's build and see how they compare to each other in the long term. One thing I will say is that the software bundle that comes with the MSI board is mostly junk and I had to re-install windows and not use most of it as my system started to become unstable with it. I should have done more research here before installing it all.

This motherboard should fit the bill.

-UEFI BIOS EZ Mode featuring friendly graphics user interface
-O.C. Tuner
-CrashFree BIOS 3
-EZ Flash 2

Ask them to flash it before they send it. That'll be the easiest way

Hey, you both recommended the same board, that is great. I'm really looking forward to reading more about it and putting it in my new build. Can't thank all of you enough for the help :)
