Get a cheap 780 ti, buy the new gtx 980, or wait for the gtx 980 ti

Solution

Blah on the reference

As for 780 Ti prices.... , again "over here"..... where are you that you get hit w/ such a premium.

$430 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814500322
$440 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125493
$420 -...
Why in the world would you spend $550 on a 780ti right now when it's 30% slower (well, that one probably only 20%) than a 980?

I would either spend a scant $330 to get a 970, which performs on-par with the gtx 780, or either wait for the 980 ti / buy a 980 now.

Well with the 980s running well up into the mid $600s for places that have em, I can see your dilemma. But where are you .... over here the Asus 780 Ti is $440 ... so if you're seeing $550 Asus 780s, I imagine you are seeing $700 ish 980s where you are.

I'd sit tight and wait for the rest of the non-reference 980s to drop....anxious to see the MSI Gaming 980.

When do you think the Gtx 980 will come out and at what cost?

They're already out, mate. Have been for a while.

If you mean the 980ti, they're probably going to be expensive and not necessarily worth it.

What resolution / refresh rate are you playing at? If it's the typical 1080p, 60Hz, there's not much reason to go beyond a 970.

Currently the gtx 780 ti is $550
980 is $620-650 for reference
Lastly 970 sells for $370-420

Yes but......the 780ti actually work without making a hell of coil whine....

I have talked to dozens of users with no coil whine. Never experienced it myself on any of my personal builds .....dunno whether dumb luck or just careful selection of components. But each time someone with call whine brought a PC here to examine for coil whine, was solved with a PSU change.

Let the brainwashing be with you though! The 980 is the Joe Montana of graphics cards! The forums say so it must be true... 30% FASTER THAN THE 780 Ti!!! YES YES YES!!!

Bit looks like the premium for the MSI 980 ($580) over the MSI 780 Ti's price here ($450) is $130 is about the same or less than what you have over there so same logic applies.

Solution

The difference is small, very small (2 - 4%), advantage to the Ti at stock, but to be fair, the 980 routinely overclocks a a lot higher than 1200 MHz, the 780 Ti not so much....which should narrow the gap a bit.

Need a better analogy tho than Joe Montana - past his prime, too old, too slow and too fragile to play the game anymore .... just like me :)

Joe Montana would have to be say a GTX 580 .... go with Aaron Rodgers (currently 3rd place in NFL)
