Is it possible to split a HDMI output from a DVD recorder (or a blu ray player) with a HDMI splitter so that a signal can go to both the TV and a receiver, which is also connected to the same TV via its own output? The signal will transmit both video and audio. I want to be able to play the DVD directly through the TV most times, but sometimes through the receiver for home theatre surround sound.

if you need it to be an A or B type solution and not A+B both at once then i'd look into an hdmi switch

An HDMI switch is designed to take inputs and feed one to the output. The switch may not work in reverse since it is not just a passive device, An HDMI distribution amplifier such as this:http://www.amazon.com/Distribution-Amplifier-Splitter-M...
or one of many others should work fine.
If your DVD-R has a digital audio output then you could just add that connection to get sound to the receiver and use the HDMI to the TV for picture. Just turn the TV volume down when you want surround.
