First off sorry if this is in the wrong section

I will most likely be buying an Dell Xps 12 as seen here: http://

The only problem is I need the Pro version of windows 8. I saw that to upgrade directly from microsoft its 99-199$? But I think I found a solution.

Through my school, I was able to download a full retail copy of windows 8.1 prox64. Although I've used the product key for my main machine (but switched back to 7) and I've used it for a virtual machine on my computer. So what I'm asking is can I use the product key to upgrade the laptop? I will delete the VM on my computer if I have to. That will save me $200 bucks which will really help me out.

I'm aware that I can't do this if it was an OEM version but it's not it's a full retail version so it shouldn't be a problem right?

It's hard to tell what it is you're trying to do. I'll try to guess at what you're doing.

If you're trying to mix a Win 8.1 pro disc/image with a non-pro key, then it will not likely work. If you're simply trying to reinstall a copy of Win 8.1 onto a different machine, with a key that you already have, and there's no problems on the virtual machine that you're running, then you shouldn't have a problem.

Let me rephrase that, you know the windows anytime upgrade that's on 7. I'm trying to do the same thing on 8.1 to 8.1 pro with my product key. I'm hoping I won't have to reinstall since it will be a new machine & I won't have the recovery media.
