First of all, if you need to secure hardware (from power surges etc..) when leaving on a trip, simply turning a computer off will not help, you need to either disconnect the cable or use the physical on/off switch on the power supply.

It's always hard to say -what- has happened, without an behavior to observe, most is guessing and speculation (most likely the cause of all "haunted houses" ever). In the BIOS you have several power-related options, and by default, any non-server BIOS is configured to...

It's always hard to say -what- has happened, without an behavior to observe, most is guessing and speculation (most likely the cause of all "haunted houses" ever). In the BIOS you have several power-related options, and by default, any non-server BIOS is configured to not boot on a power-change, but most BIOS'es can be configured to

1) Always power on
2) Keep last power state (in case of a power outage and the machine was turned on, it will be automatically booted).
3) Wake-on-lan, by sending special network packets, the computer can be turned on, and this must be configured.

What happened in your case is... impossible for me (or anyone else) to say, as it is pure guessing, and unless you had a power outage (see if any of your clocks are showing the wrong time or blinking 00:00/12:00), the most likely (ockham's razor ftw!) scenario is that the computer wasn't actually off when you left.
