Has my SSD failed?

Hey everyone, (Sorry about the long read)
So my PC has been running strong for about 18 months, but recently has been freezing up every now and then, but rebooting like normal.Today however, upon reboot, the BOOT_DEVICE_LED on my motherboard lit up and now my SSD isn't showing up in BIOS.

I've tried the following to remedy the solution:
- Changing the SATA and power cables to the SSD - switched with my HDD to ensure they weren't the parts at fault and the HDD worked fine with all the different configurations I tested. (Hopefully this also means my mobo is safe)
- Running with a skeleton setup - CPU, RAM, SSD - still not showing up. Had a fiddle with the SATA modes but that wasn't the issue (obviously running in AHCI again as normal)
- Booting from the Windows 8 recovery disk to see if I could detect the drive. This was a bit hit and miss - would sometimes detect it, but when trying to perform operations like System Cleanup or Reinstalling, it would say the disk was locked or a partition was missing.

So at this stage, it seems like the SSD has failed, but after having a look around, I try flashing my BIOS just to see whether that was the issue (even though has not been updated for almost a year [P8Z77V-PRO]). Surprisingly, on the American Megatrends POST screen, the SSD pops up, and on the first boot. Windows loads, but eventually freezes just after login. I try this again a few times and different things happen each time, such as attempting system repair, restarting itself (which took half and hour, until it froze). This is where I'm stuck. The SSD appears in BIOS half the time, but the BOOT_DEVICE_LED is still red for a long time with the ASUS screen, before eventually booting into Windows if I leave it. Otherwise, its just back to the original state where it doesn't show up at all.

Could this be some unrelated issue? Or is it safe to assume that my SSD has failed? I just wanted to ask you guys for help since RMA'ing in Australia is a pain (shipping internationally, long waits, reluctant stores etc.), and I have my final exams for high school coming up, so this really isn't an ideal time to go about setting up my PC from scratch.

Thanks in advance!
Jeremy

Hi Paul,
Thanks for the quick response!
This was actually one of the first things I thought of, but unfortunately the drive wouldn't show up on another PC. But since it appears to be semi-working again, I'll give it another shot.

An Update: It might not be dead after all! (But it's not all good)
I had another look around the web and tried the 20 min power cycling suggested over at Crucial. It might have been shutting down from the initial freeze that caused a sudden loss of power. Unsure of how long it was going to work for, I've updated the firmware to make sure that wasn't an issue, and created an image of the entire drive just in case.
When putting it back into my system, it's still somewhat worrisome because it takes about 20 seconds for the BIOS to detect the SSD and begin booting, and the BOOT_DEVICE_LED is red during this time. Once this starts, its back to normal but it didn't use to take this long. Anyone have any suggestions?
