i built my own pc about 7-8 months ago, here are the specs if anyone is interested:

intel i7 4770k,
asus maximus vi hero motherboard,
corsair vengeance 16gb ram,
gigabyte nvidea gtx 760 4gb,
samsung 500gb ssd,
corsair rm series 850w psu

last night it just died as i was using it :( now for the life of me i cant get it to turn back on. tried all the basics, plugging it in somewhere else, different cable ect, no luck. the strange part is, when i plug it in the lights on the motherboard turn on for about 5 seconds (during this time the pc still wont turn on) but then after the 5 seconds the lights turn off.

i was thinking it's most likely the power supply but seeing as it is able to power the motherboard lights i thought it could just as easily be a problem with the motherboard? im really confused and was wondering if anything i said made any of you think "yep that's definately a ____ fault"

any advice in this dark hour would be much appreciated.

Solution
Its the Power supply i am 80% sure about it so it would be better you test your pc with a different PSU any cheap low wattage PSU would do just remove the GPU for that if you dont have any spare PSU then try to borrow it from someone.
Either the motherboard is dead or the PSU is dead motherboard lights and also the paperclip test dont prove that the PSU is alright .

does the processor heatsink fan spinning does the hdd making sound? if not then the PSU is most likely dead.

hi - thank you for your response.

no the cpu fan does not spin, and the hdd doesn't make any sound - the only sign that the pc is actually being powered is the lights on the motherboard, but even they don't stay on for very long. in your experience would you say it's more likely to be the power supply or the motherboard?
