I think my boot drive ( an ssd) has gone bust. Its either at 90% usage or above or at 0%. Is there any way to confirm this?

Go to the task manager. It will tell you what each drive's usage is. You should be able to see if it is your ssd or not.

Hey there, aflumbahgee!

This is rather unusual, SSDs have leveling technology which means they fix themselves as they encounter an issue. This is also known as self-correcting feature.
I'd suggest you update your SSD firmware as well as your mobo (BIOS) drivers.
I'd also check the SATA mode and switch from AHCI to IDE or vice versa.
Also I'd recommend changing cables and swapping SATA ports, this might improve your SSD performance.
Here's something that might help you: http://forum.corsair.com/v3/showthread.php?t=105812
You can also go through this thread for another way to confirm the health status on your SSD:

Hope this helped. :)
