Hello everybody ...
I have a 40/10 mbps fiber optic connection ... and the ISP support gave me an alcatel lucent i-240w-q ont for the service. the problem is that Iam using my connection mainly for ps3 gaming while this ont doesn't support UPnP or Bridge mode, and Iam forced to use the DMZ setting for the ps3. the question now : if I brought a good router like a Linksys AC router and signed it to the DMZ, then connected the PS3 to the router ... will it make a better experience in gaming ?? or just keep the current setup by putting the PS3 itself into DMZ ???
thanks

It depends if you are using wireless or not. The ps3 obviously will not use any of the 802.11ac features and to a point will actually degrade your wireless on the 2.4g band since it runs 802.11g. The router though may help other devices in your house it depends how good the radios are in the ONT device....normally most are average at the very best. I would be sure to turn off the wireless in the ONT device if you get a second router.

If you are using a wired connection there there will not be much difference.

You might see a little more security on the game console since the second router would run UPnP which unlike DMZ only allows traffic for certain ports but you now have a second level of NAT which even with UPnP still have issues.

thanks so much mr.bill001g for the help ... your answer is perfectly satisfying. any way i decide to go with the second router option. like you said, it will help the other devices in the house which will get benefit of the ac feature and the other features in the new router. thanks again

What may help though is the newer technology in Quality Of Service QOS. In the latest crop of routers from Netgear and Asus there is a technology called Dynamic QOS. It looks at devices and applications and determine priority on bandwidth and latency. This occurs wireless and wired. It is particularly important on gaming where the need is for improved latency as opposed to speed/bandwidth.

Look at the Netgear R7500 as an example of this new technology. Here is a link to a review I wrote if interested.
