I replaced a hard drive in my RAID 1 that failed. I was told by some people that it doesn't need to be formatted, that it will start to rebuid by it self. I can't tell if it is actually doing that or if it indeed needs to be formatted before. And if I need to format, do I disablr the RAID so the pc sees it as a second drive to allow formmatting?

Solution
You don't need to format it. Also there should be some type of raid utility that allows you to see what is happening(rebuilding). Check the manual for your raid controller and there should be some specific instructions for replacing a drive.
