I've never played games at higher than 60fps, so I'm not sure what to expect.

From a 120 Hz or 144 Hz monitor you can expect smoother more responsive motion.
From a higher resolution monitor you get better pixel density and generally better image quality.
You can have both - Asus ROG PG278Q

Going with a 144hz monitor will definitely wield you a smoother experience with no screen tearing if have the hardware to keep those frames up. Alot of people have used 144hz monitors and never went back to 60hz. On the other hand, going for a higher resolution will wield better image quality and details (higher pixel density). The choice is really up to you. 144hz monitors are probably more optimal for fast paced games like FPSes and higher resolutions for those crazy visuals.

That one is out of my price range, but thanks for the recommendation. I was considering going with the ASUS VG248QE since it's $250 or spending $250 more on the 28'' Samsung 2160p monitor.

I definitely wouldn't recommend this Samsung. They have brought it out as a very cheap 4K monitor. The image quality isn't great. On top of that, computers aren't ready yet to play games at 4K. You would need at least two high end cards in SLI.

The PG278Q is expensive.
You will be looking at a 24 inch 1920 x 1080 120 or 144 Hz display, or a 27 inch 2560 x 1440 display.
I would lean towards the gaming monitor.
Have a look at the BenQ XL2411T.
