Hey guys, I got a problem with RTC3 Platinum. For whatever reason it keeps causing my display driver to fail as well as windows desktop manager. Sometimes I just get a black screen that it doesnt recover from and just have to restart the pc with the power button. Other times it will go black then minimize RTC3... then tell me that windows desktop manager has stopped working and/or that my display driver has stopped working and has recovered. Theres nothing specific in game that I'm doing it just does it at random and frequently enough to really put a damper on enjoying the game.

My specs:

i7 840qm
dual Nvidia 285m in SLI (usually just run one though).
8gb ram
windows 7 64 bit

I have plenty of games that I play a few give me issues. But I dont understand why this one is doing it as its not a demanding game like some that I play (Crysis 2, Battlefield 3, Skyrim etc..) The few games I have issues with are this one Starcraft 2 and occassionally World of Warcraft. I need to have windows reloaded to fix some other issues. But is there anything I can do to keep RTC3 running for now? Is there any way I could troubleshoot whats causing it?

That game is from 2004, likely your new hardware is causing issues with the game code.

Try running the game in compatability mode for XP and also run only one video card with it see if that is more stable.

No new hardware. But I usually do run it with only one card anyways as I dont like running both if i dont need to (pretty loud and gets pretty warm when I run both). Just tried compatibility mode for XP service pack 3... ran longer than usual but still ended up failing. Gonna try again and mess with compatibility mode see if it helps.

By "new hardware" I mean not from 2004 when the game came out not just new stuff you got last week :)

Do you have onboard video? If you do, try only using that, you should be able to just disable the nVidia card in Device Manager. Or maybe even setup a virtual machine with XP on the system with a custom hardware setup for the game with older drivers.
