If you currently have a 4770 (non-K) version and a GTX 980 then your bottleneck is going to be the CPU for some games and not the GPU.

Since you can't overclock the 4770(nonK) and you don't want to upgrade to a new socket that would require a new mobo and new DDR4 ram sticks, the single fastest right now option is Devil's Canyon.

Are there any charts that compare a 4770 (nonK) with a overclocked 4790k at around 4.4Ghz (reasonable overclock values) ?

What is the performance gain in raw CPU , and what is the performance gains in Frames per second assuming both systems run GTX 980 and playing latest 3D games at 1080p all maxed out ultra settings?

In essence, for an extra $330 bucks or so, is the upgrade worth it, can there be measurable improvements in speed when actually playing games?

The current CPU is not going to bottleneck in ANY games, no matter how CPU intensive they are. There's no need to even think about upgrading with that good of a CPU. 3.9GHz is plenty for even 3 way SLI 980, you just won't get anything extra with 4790K on 4.4Ghz, a couple FPS extra at most. And you can't OC 4790k on non-Z MoBo anyways, but the upgrade isn't worth it in first place.

IMO, the truth is somewhere in the middle. A stock 4770 is NOT going to bottleneck a 980 (or SLI 980's)...an OC 4770K or 4790K WILL result in higher fps and benchmarks however.

Long story short, I would buy a 4790 over a locked chip any day...but I would never waste money in upgrading a 4770 to a 4770K/4790K.
