Compared to a 970, that is.

It was for me, I wanted the reference cooler. If they had had GTX970 reference I probably would have bought a pair.

In terms of performance, not so much. And it depends on your display resolution and frequency.

I have to agree there, the stock cooler is quite a beautiful thing from the side

I kind of agree with the sentiment of Eximo... If the 970 had the stock cooler I may have purchased one already. Since it doesn't exist, I have not.

I don't get why they didn't release it with the pretty stock cooler; it seems to work very well, and pushing air *out* of the case seems like a better option then shoving it around inside like more aftermarket coolers do.

The NTTVM cooler is about $50 to manufacture if I recall correctly. That would be a good chunk of the cost of a ~$330 card. For a ~$530 card it makes more sense.

Once they have been out for a while, you can usually start seeing the reference coolers appear on ebay. The PNY GTX970 card with the cheap blower style cooler is an option, then swap it out for the GTX980 cooler perhaps. (Actually what I wanted to do with my GTX580s, slap the 780 cooler on them (would have take a bit of modding), but no one was asking a reasonable price at the time.

I was considering the PNY blower card, but I don't know much about PNY cards as per quality control, RAM etc.
Can you say anything to convince me they are decent to deal with?

PNY manufactures a lot of cards for high end OEM, workstation class cards mostly. At the other end they make a lot of very low end cards. Never seem to release any popular products for enthusiasts.

Their 970 looks like it was a recycled cooler from older products. I'm sure it works fine since the 970 is relatively low power at stock. Early reviews didn't look so good, but more people write to complain then to praise in general.

I would pick them up if I was going to strip the cooler off. (Kind of why I went with the reference 980, long term goal is a second card and waterblocks)
