Sometimes it works but most time it fails and no amount of "fix error" works. If I try wireless connections it works. Then I disable wireless and plug in cable from router..failure.

If it used to work, then either the port at the router/modem is damaged (can you try another port), the Ethernet port on the motherboard was damaged (do you see a connection light when the cable is inserted), or the cable itself is damaged (any crimps or loose ends?).

It's working right now. Yes, the light comes on when connected. I've replaced the cable and tried all available port on router with same results. The printer that's plugged into router works on all ports of router (if that means anything). I have Norton 360 and suspect that. But I am unsure how to test the theory to eliminate speculation.
