I am thinking about upgrading my graphics card in my machine but not quite sure if I want to just yet. Currently I have a Gigabyte Radeon HD 7970, and I am looking at upgrading to a EVGA GeForce GTX 780 6gb. Idk if the benefit will outweigh the cost, or vice versa, and that is my dilemma at the current point and time. With new games coming out like Shadow of Mordor utilizing more memory off the GPU's I am wondering if now is a good time to upgrade or if I should hold steady with my current build and wait for the next line of cards to come out, whenever that may be.

Current build:
CPU: Intel Core i5-4670K 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler
Motherboard: ASRock Z87 Extreme4 ATX LGA1150 Motherboard
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory
Storage: Samsung 850 Pro Series 256GB 2.5" Solid State Drive
Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive
Video Card: Gigabyte Radeon HD 7970 3GB Video Card
Case: NZXT Phantom 410 (Black) ATX Mid Tower Case
Power Supply: Rosewill Capstone 650W 80+ Gold Certified ATX Power Supply
Optical Drive: Asus BC-12B1ST/BLK/B/AS Blu-Ray Reader, DVD/CD Writer

If you are definitely getting Shadow of Mordor I'd stick with the current build. If the performance isn't there, then upgrade.

I'd probably go for the GTX 970, which I think is faster than the stock 780, but only has 4GB VRAM.

4GB should be enough for 1080p.

^ Totally agree.
Right now prices of the GTX760/770/780 cards have dropped massively, so if you decide to upgrade fairly soon, look carefully, you may be able to bag a bargain GTX780, if not the GTX970 is devastatingly fast.

The guys are right. Hang on and assess how your performance is when the game is released. If it doesn't do it for you then upgrade. GPU pricing is just too changeable right now and it would kind of be a rash decision.

Also, my system is similar to yours:
i7 3770 @ 4.3GHz
8GB 1333mhz DDR3
Samsung 840 EVO 250GB
AsRock Z77 Extreme 4
Sapphire 7970 3GB OC w/ Boost

My MSI GTX 970 will arrive tomorrow. I will be purchasing the game as well. If you hold on for a few days I can get your some benchmarks, but you can probably already get this from the internet.

I look forward to testing it later to compare it to my 7970.
7970 isn't bad by any means, but I definitely want the next step.
