I recently purchased a samsung ssd 840 evo 120gb for my o/s went throught the installation all was well.

After some reveiwing i decided to make the switch to ahci.

I followed the regedit guide and restarted. Made the change in bios and now wont recognise the hitachi drive in post and crashes out. If i unplug the drive and boot i get to windows with no issues. I can the plug the drive back in and all is well.

If inswitch back to ide it posts and boots no problems.

I have tryed swpping the sata ports and still same issue.

I have borrowed a samsung spinpoint 1tb and it posts and boots in ahci no issues.

Some may laught at my rig but its mine and i build it :)

Motherboard is a asus p5ql-epu

You should change it to AHCI before installing windows not after. Some reg fixes MAY fix it others dont. I would reinstall it if you want to use the SSD

My issue is that even if I wanted to a complete reinstall, it wont post the hitachi drive plugged in in ahci.

You don't need to boot to the hard drive to do a reinstall, you need to boot to the install disk, anyhow, you may need to install the ACHI driver, since you didn't do the first install with AHCI mode turned on, the AHCI driver may not be installed.

Turn off PC
Unplug your HDD
Install the SSD
Boot into BIOS
Change to ahci mode
Set SSD as boot drive
Reboot
Install your OS
Turn off PC
Plug in you HDD
Boot into BIOS
Confirm SSD is still set as boot drive
Start OS

Have you tried unplugging your optical drive (sata?). It could be throwing things out.

Also if your computer is trying to boot from the HDD and Windows was installed out of ahci mode it will fail to boot like you are experiencing. Check it's booting from the SSD with Windows installed in ahci mode.

You might want to try different sata ports for your drives.
