So I recently built my PC. I have a i7 - 4790K CPU with a Noctua NH -D15 Tower Cooler on a Maximus VII formula motherboard. I am a complete newbie to over clocking and this is an initial attempt to overclock CPU. Im looking for two things:

1) Push my cpu to the absolute limit with my current setup. I understand liquid cooling allows for additional overclocking headroom but this being my first build was not too sure about a liquid loop.

2) Good overclocked setting for 24/7 running.

I have only changed the CPU voltage and the multiplier in the UEFI bios. After booting into windows, I run Prime 95 for 3 minutes to ensure stability before pushing the multiplier or voltage higher. I monitor the CPU temperatures in Celsius using Real Temp GT 3.7.0. Given below are my CPU clocks and temperatures:

Multiplier x42 @ 1.150 V
Temps : 73 | 77 | 73 | 71

Multiplier x44 @ 1.150 V
Temps: 75 | 79 | 75 | 72

Multiplier x45 @ 1.150 V
Temps: 77 | 82 | 77 | 74

Multiplier x46 @ 1.150 V
Temps: Failed Prime95

Multiplier x46 @ 1.175 V
Temps: Failed Prime95

Multiplier x46 @ 1.20 V
Temps: 84 | 89 | 84 | 80

Multiplier x47 @ 1.20 V
Temps: Failed Prime95

Multiplier x47 @ 1.275 V
Temps: 100 C on CPU #2 - Stopped Testing

Final Result - Tested additionally with 15 Minutes of Prime95 - Stable Temperatures

Multiplier x46 @ 1.20 V
Temps: 86 | 91 | 86 | 82

What are my next steps?

Thanks in advance.

Solution
The latest versions of Prime95 do support AVX2 which Haswell can run. This is an unrealistic test that puts extra stress on the CPU, that could be the source of the high temps.

Try AIDA 64 Extreme. That is the test I like to pass to make doubly sure the system is stable.

Noctua NH-D14 should outperform an h80i by a little bit I believe.

I came across an Asus ROG stress performance program that gave me a 20C drop form each of the posted temperatures. Do you think its Prime95 thats resulting in these high temperatures?

Also when I do not run Prime95 the cpu temp is around 55-60 C at 4.6Ghz @ Core voltage of 1.20 V

Do you think its because you have a liquid cooler?

Getting 4 cores @ 1.256v @ 4.6Ghz.
1 core @ 4.8Ghz @ 1.231v

Pretty darn stable..... I had a few BSOD but upped a little the voltage to what it is at and it's 24/7 BOINC running, also ran RealBench for 24hours straight on stress test and no issues now. I think I am real lucky! Also, it's running on air cooler. Cpu cores are 72deg. I am looking into getting water cooled.
