So I'm trying to build my first gaming rig. i need help determining if the graphics card i want is compatible with my motherboard.

mobo:ASUS M5A78L-M LX PLUS AM3+ AMD 760G + SB710 Micro ATX AMD Motherboard

yes it is compatible with your MOBO but it will work in PCIe 2.0 mod
usualy you should check if your PSU can handle the new GPU

PS: try to get Mobo that suports PCIe 3.0 to pull the max of your GPU

ye coz current gen gpus cant use all the speed provided from PCIe 2.0 but there is always the question baout next gen upgrades + its only like 5$ difrence + he gonn have Mobo with newer chipset

Can you find a better motherboard? even a M5A97 (R2.0) would be a better choice.

hmmm
CPU: AMD FX-4300 Vishera Quad-Core 3.8GHz (4.0GHz) will be bottleneck but mantle will help a bit there
btw have you considered intel variant?
