Will it play higher maybe?

It really depends on the game in question. In any case, you aren't going to get better performance out of anything that's out right now.

It will play 1440p ultra. I would say 1080p would be a walk in the park. Just go look at a couple benchmarks on the GTX 980.

Yes you will get much more than 60 FPS with this rig i would recommend to get 2x4 gb ram instead of single 8 gb stick as dual channel is faster than single channel.

I will say gtx 980 will able to deliver decent games at ultra settings 4-5 years from now the gtx 580 and 590 was released in 2010 and they can still give decent fps on modern games at ultra settings.
