I had to reinstall mavericks as my computer just kept getting stuck on reboot with spinning gear and apple logo. I couldnt boot into safe mode. I have a 4Gig mac book pro and downloaded mavericks initially through my macs update/installer. It did slow down my mac. But the getting stuck in reboot was I know due to some app download from Internet the night before. I had checked my HD it was fine. I had the HD rebuilt with disk worrior anyway. I also did all the usual repair disk and repair permissions etc prior to reinstall.
I started the reinstall in recovery mode. It got past the installation page where it automatically restarts computer or you can click restart. It then started but is stuck with the apple and gear spinning. Does this part take long as well?

Solution
When you boot up, hold the COMMAND key + S. This will boot you into Single User Mode. Once Single User Mode has loaded completely, type in this:

/sbin/fsck -fy
and press RETURN/ENTER.

This should run through a bunch of different HD repairs and possibly should fix your computer (it fixed mine when partitioning and installing Yosemite Beta)
