Hello,

I'm planning on buying the Sapphire R9 290 4Gb reference card. Everywhere on the internet i read that there is a problem with this card. It would run very hot and very loud. I'm planning on buying this card because it's much cheaper that the non-reference cards in my country. I've got multiple fans in my PC but i have no idea if it's enough to handle the card smoothly. My PC is build into a wooden case so the hot air is not able to flow out fast.

Current PC specs:
24inch samsung syncmaster 1920x1080
Inter core i7 3820 @ 3.6GHz (8 CPU's)
16gb RAM
Nvidia Geforce GTX 650
Windows 7 professional.
Sabertooth x79

Is it a good idea to but the R9 290 reference card?

Thank you in advance.

Kind regards,

Stijn

Either way you will need a better PSU, but for the 290 you will need a relatively larger one. Also, since it is a 290 with the reference cooler, that thing is going to be insanely hot, especially if airflow is bad, so throttling is a near certainty

Well, you have more than enough system ram for any task at the moment. Processor is more than fine, to prevent bottlenecks, even at stock speeds.

You're just gonna want to up that power supply. You'll need about 650W minimum, but I'd suggest something larger and of quality to give you adequate headroom.

EVGA 750W 80+ GOLD

^ Great value, and will power your rig with an R9-290 handily

Thank you for you reply. I actually dont want to invest in other components except for the graphics card. Is it better to invest in a GTX 770 or R9 280x?

I would go with the 970, it is roughly the same price, and is as strong as a 780 ti. It is also an amazing overclocker, particularly the MSI and Gigabyte models. MSI card is shorter, but Gigabyte has better overclocking (for this card anyway).

Edit: Also, that PSU will have issues with the 290, so there's also that.
