Right now, I have an AMD FX-6300 and a Radeon sapphire r9 290 dual x (i think, it came in a purple box and dx diag just says amd r9 200 series)

I would like to just upgrade in general, make my games run at a bit higher frame rate. Im not looking for a huge jump or anything, this build can already run metro LL at about 50 fps and PS2 ultra at around 40, but if I upgrade, should it be the CPU or GPU.
Im not afraid to overclock.

Get Core i5. R9 290 is fast enough .

Yes but that requires buying a new motherboard. Hence my question.

Thanks for replying. Which i5? I'm willing to spend up to 250, but does the i5 have different pins than my amd ones? Will it fit?

I'd rather not buy a new motherboard.

Then overclock FX 6300 but with not too expensive aftermarket cooler , otherwise I5 .

at stock clocks in games
i5 4590 is 20% faster than FX 8350 and 40% faster than FX 6300 . Your card is great and need a powerful CPU .

Well you can't get an i5 unless you buy a new motherboard. But for 250, I may be able to find a decent H97 motherboard paired with the i5-4460. I'll look tomorrow. Right now I'm going to bed.

I would personally stick with the 290 for a little bit longer and upgrade the CPU. If you don't want to make all those changes, which requires installing OS and programs again, the best thing you could do is get a 8320 or 8350 and overclock.

rockie does have a point. Overclocking may not be a bad idea. What motherboard do you have?

I have the M5A97 asus r2.0 I believe, and in all honesty, Atm I'd rather not buy a new mobo, reinstall OS and everything. For the time being, I might just buy a better CPU, like one that runs default at 4ghz. I'm not throwing aftermarket cooling out the window, although I would prefer not to use liquid. Is there a good amd CPU I'm looking for? Thanks for the help Barto and rocky, I know I sound like a doofus.
