Did you buy the Sims 3 on Steam? If you have the Sims either by disc or from an external site, chances are you can't and you'll have to rebuy it on Steam.

If you bought a Steam key from a site like Amazon, though, open up Steam, click "Add a Game" in the corner, "Activate a product on Steam," and it'll eventually ask you for your code.

No, I bought it as a disk a few years ago.

In that case, you'll need to rebuy it on Steam.

Don't worry, the sales get ridiculous, especially in spite of EA.

There was an option to 'register a non steam game' I just don't know how to do it. Will that not work with my game?

Adding Non-Steam games isn't really 'adding them' as in to your library. It's a shortcut. If I were to take Space Pirates and Zombies (it's a good game, don't hate), a standalone, to Steam, it would just make it appear in my own library screen (but not register to my account). It would just be a shortcut to the real game, though it'll change your status on Steam to say "In Non-Steam Game: <game>" and in some cases you'll still be able to hit shift tab and go into the overlay.

This unfortunately will not work in the way you were hoping for.

Do you still have the case for the game? If you do, look through the manual, i remember when i got civ 5, there was some steam activation codes in the case.

It's possible. If Civ5 came with both standalone AND Steam keys (as I've seen happen in the past), it's possible The Sims 3 could have done the same.
