My friend plays a couple Need For Speed games on a reg. 1080p monitor. Nothing too fancy like BF4 or anything. He only games a couple hours a week. Is a GTX 970 good enough for him for like 5 years?

GTX 970 is more than enough!
It is overkill in 1080p gaming.

I bought MSI GTX 970 4G recently and it is a beast in performance.

I guess so , even a 280X will be good enough for racing sims 5 years down the road.

Nowadays it might seem overkill however 3-4 years down the road it will still be able to run games ( demanding games ) on medium settings 1080p no problems , my old 6950 released in 2011 still rocks BF4 on high with very good framerates.

probably.I have had a GTX 680 for over 2 years now, got it new on release date and I dont regret my decision, still plays most games on 60FPS. And now since 680's are so much cheaper I'am gonna SLI. :) ... So the answer to your question is YES. Might last even longer than 5 years because next gen consoles have already been released, and this card is a next gen card so i don't see it not being good after 5 years. With in the time period when prices drop, you always have the ability to SLI!! But even a single card is good enough, besides you play at 1080P, most games should do pretty darn good with that... Happy Gaming.
