So i do not know what i should do, i want to expand my storage for my in home media that i rip from my blue rays for the house. I use plex for all the tv's in my house through chromecast and i would like to keep my Desktop as the server, since it has a i7 on it and it can transcode all my videos with no down time.

If i want to expand my storage, should i buy a Docking bay ( i have no more internal room for another hard drive)

Or is there a cheap server storage type of setup i can use, that will still allow me to run and transcode plex videos through my desktop since i am on a budget and i do not want to spend more then i have to since i already have my desktop.

if you have something better to suggest i would be greatfull. Also any links to products you might recommend would be nice.

A decent external storage device (either network attached or eSata) is going to run several hundred dollars plus the drives. Ones that perform well are going to be $400-$600. My suggestion would be to replace an internal hard drive with a 4TB drive like this one:

I already have 4x4tb in the desktop's bay and 3 more that i have left and have no where to put them. Are Docking bays reliable and good for reading videos? or do they have no affect of the Harddrives being used

something like this

Most of the eSATA towers are JBOD (RAID-0) enclosures - meaning that they combined the drives (in your case 3 X 4TB) into a single drive for the PC. They range from $199 - $499 on NewEgg. I have never used these type of enclosures before....

If it were me - I would replace the case of your current HTPC to one that supported all the drives I could place in it. If you run out of SATA ports, you can get a PCI SATA card for $20-$50. It would be less than an external enclosure....and it would work....no worries about JBOD.

The only thing about the docking bay you gave the link to - your hard drives would be out in the open....that setup is good if you are making images of hard drives or duplicating hard drives where the drives would only be plugged in on a temporary basis.

Here is a great 10-bay system: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

This PCI card will allow up to 8 drives to be added at SATA III: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
